In fact, this has been the postwar norm, has it not? Headline CPI inflation has been positive through most recessionary periods since the Great Depression.

I'm surprised more isn't made of this fact. While MV = PQ may be an analytic truth, it is surely a more important truth that M and V and P can all increase while Q falls. Well, maybe not in some ideally competitive economy which no actual cost-cutting, price-increasing businessmen can be bothered conforming to.

Not that there is likely to be very high inflation in the US, even given some increase in inflation rates somewhere down the line. Capitalists look at the burgeoning educated deferential populations of Asia and see an over-supply of labor for decades to come. They do not have a lot to worry about other than increased democratization. Yes, commodity prices might rise for a while, but capitalism has no qualms about inflicting a decade of mass impoverishment on uppity regions if that is deemed necessary. So, the developing countries' good times in the 1970s were followed by the IMF-austerity packages of the 1980s.

And does anyone really think that if, say, oil went to $200 a barrel and stayed there for long, the likes of Hugo Chavez would be permitted to stay in power rather than be first depicted as an intolerable threat to Western civilization and then removed, to the cheers of the mainstream media?

Thanks for giving a voice to some of my doubts abo...

Thanks for giving a voice to some of my doubts about "the unavoidable inflation scenario".
